Max Factor was founded in 1909 by Maximilian Faktorowicz, a Polish-Jewish cosmetician. After immigrating to the United States in 1904, Factor provided wigs and theatrical makeup to the growing film industry. He also began to experiment with and developed a thinner greasepaint in cream form. In the early days of the movie industry, greasepaint was only available in stick form, and would crack and cake. Factor’s new innovation revolutionalized theatrical makeup.
In 1991 the company was purchased by Procter & Gamble. Brand sales dropped throughout the decade and it was announced that in spring 2010, the brand would be discontinued in the United States as Procter & Gamble planned to concentrate on the more popular CoverGirl line. Max Factor will still be available overseas.1
